The plus side

Being an insomniac can be rather annoying. But at this time of year waking up at 4:30 in the morning brings an unexpected bonus, as I found this morning when I was once more robbed of sleep after an insomnia-free week. Why? Being nearly the longest day of the year meant that my city was bathed in rose-coloured early morning sunlight. So I went for a walk. It didn't banish the girl fog, but an hour wandering the deserted streets beat half an hour on the exercise bike any time!

  1. When I worked as a delivery helper for a local bakery (saturday job when I was 13) it was great cycling to work at 4am in the Summer months (less so in winter) It was just starting to get light, but the streets were deserted.

Either that or I'm looking back through rose coloured glasses :)

  2. What can I say, but this:

The thing that surprised me was the way that at about 20 to 6 it was as though someone had thrown a giant "on" switch and the city went from empty to having traffic all in the space of about ten minutes. Weird.

  3. Yes, thank you... Just how old do you think I am!!! I cycled to the bakery - we did the deliveries in a Transit van (and never stole a cream cake along the way, honest)

Mind you I did have a hell of a hill to climb to get home (Thurmaston Lane past British Steel when it was still there for those that know Leicester). Couldn't have had it in the morning on the way to work to come downhill when I was tired could I!

Jenny, you are right early morning are the best time of the day. Not that I am often up that early but when I am I really think I should be more often.

  5. My fave time of day for being out and about. I used to ride down to Weymouth to arrive for 5:30 or so, so got to see empty roads, the stars, the moon on the mist, and wildlife everywhere, and the occasional glorious sunrise...

  6. Sadly no four-legged wildlife yesterday. Plenty of entertaining pigeons, gulls and crows clearing up the edible detritus left behind by tourists and revellers though, very entertaining.

I would say I'd like to do it more often, but being given that opportunity more often than I'd like means I'd kinda prefer the opposite at the moment.
