I looked at the ...Fascinating but use with care ... I looked at the gay vs homosexual chart that you mentioned and found the graph as you mentioned a slow decline in gay's old usage with a rapid rise as it's new usage from the mid 80's. If you look at the underlying data you can see that it is possibly skewed by the changes in popularity of the dramatist John Gay! You really need to be able to filter that out to see the true picture. :)

Rachel XXXRachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13108824048813344322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-23165804582058665122010-12-19T09:05:31.200+00:002010-12-19T09:05:31.200+00:00I should have provided this link near the top of t...I should have provided this link near the top of the last comment:
http://corpus.byu.edu/

Enjoy!Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08027942517258679266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-1519995836914794512010-12-18T22:36:28.823+00:002010-12-18T22:36:28.823+00:00I figured you'd all like it. There are other public corpus and n-gram tools out there - Microsoft Research have one, for instance - but they usually aren't as easy to use as this one.

I should caution you all though that this is just books. It doesn't include magazines, newspapers, the internet (or its precursors) or the spoken word. To illustrate with an extreme example, if you were to use one of my mother's bookcases as a corpus, you might believe eighteenth century English had undergone a resurgence since the 1960s, due to her occasional penchant for reading historical romances.

Interestingly I noticed when plotting "gay" as far as 2008, that the word is in decline, it peaked in the '90s. Has being gay become run-of-the-mill, so nobody writes about it any more?Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08027942517258679266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-58908108014247117572010-12-18T16:05:01.719+00:002010-12-18T16:05:01.719+00:00I always thought that 'transgender' was an...I always thought that 'transgender' was an umbrella term covering all 'trans' folk whereas 'transsexual' and 'transvestite' are specific to their type.

Shirley Anne xxxShirley Annehttp://www.minkyweasel.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-23377263564224127522010-12-18T14:39:30.855+00:002010-12-18T14:39:30.855+00:00Better yet, try transgender and transvestite :-)Better yet, try transgender and transvestite :-)Bunnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12533555060918801821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-64798260095921822042010-12-18T13:38:09.597+00:002010-12-18T13:38:09.597+00:00You have done it again and my life is melting away...You have done it again and my life is melting away...

Why were people writing about cars in 1800 twice as often as bicycles at their peak?

Everybody used gay in 1800 and nobody dared write homosexual! suddenly the graphs swoop together and tangle for a while, love this...

Caroline xxxCarolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02133031265351841626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4834395892091327520.post-44311872825683545002010-12-18T13:13:49.511+00:002010-12-18T13:13:49.511+00:00That is an interesting way to look at label.
