First last

Yesterday was spent on paintwork. Stripping the aftermath of a disastrous home respray about a decade ago from the bonnet (tr for non-Brits: hood) of my old wreck and spraying a good thick coat of grey zinc phosphate primer. Sanding down some of my horrific bodging, smoothing off the rough surfaces.
Me and my dad, working on an old car on a Bank Holiday afternoon.
By now my mother will have had the Long Chat with him. I'm sure his reaction will be similar to my mother's, but like her he'll never look at me in quite the same way again. My file will have a Post-it note with "Transgendered" written on it stuck to its cover forever more.
So I've had my last unencumbered bloke-only afternoon with my dad.
My first "last".

  1. I take it the zonc phosphate is to fake galvanise it? If so please let me know how it works out.

  2. That's right. Nothing ever fully stops the tinworm, but this stuff's about as good as it gets, primer-wise.

I'm sure he'll be OK with it just like my mother was.

  3. As I've headed towards transition and full-time, thes lasts have taken on a greater significance. Only the other week I had a few beers in male mode with a couple of work mates and I realised that it would be the last time I did that. It saddened me for a short while until I realised that I'd beable to have a few glasses of wine with the girls in the future. It was then that I realised that the Lasts are merely the last sentence in a chapter of a long book. Although it's quite sad when a good chapter ends, it's just a taster for the next one.

I'm sure everything will go fine with your dad x

  4. I think it's because this is the first time I've thought about it.

Plus it's my dad, not your usual coming-out.

  5. Jenny, it may be your last unencumbered bloke-only afternoon with your dad, but the next afternoon you spend together, will be your dad's first time getting to know his child, for who she really is.

  6. This is true. I think the post must have caught me at a maudlin moment. Had a phone chat with my parents last night. Like my mother, he's concerned for my health as a result of it all but fine with it.

My mate C provided a blinding insight yesterday. He suggested my mother didn't like things like my crack about the large size ladies shoes catalogue not doing my size not because she knew about me but because she knew about her friend's son-in-law and knew it was no laughing matter.

  8. Thanks Julia,

It's certainly removed a load from my mind.
